Kings Norton Summer Festival 2007

Arriving for the third time to the Kings Norton Summer Festival, Knex3 has established its trademark appearance where researcher and reporter, Harry Palmer meets, greets and shares updates and project developments. The summer festival 2007 took the simple and effective approach of sharing the latest discoveries to the public, whilst highlighting new lines of research – many of them recommended by those in the local area. Conversations and genuine interest meant that Harry now plans the next 8 months of 2007/08 enthusiastic articles for Knex3!

A celebration of local enthusiasts - by folk artist Harry Palmer

Radio Knex3 is a brand new audio and written journalistic website hosted by Harry Palmer and featuring enthusiasts from the 3 Estates and neighbouring parts of Kings Norton. Coinciding with the FM radio broadcast, an audio CD and dedicated website has been launched to highlight local people's dedication to the passionate things that they do in the area.

The hour long ‘audio magazine' went out on 98.7 FM New Style Radio on Friday 28th April between 12-1.00pm 2006. The one-off broadcast followed a live interview with folk artist Harry Palmer who cherished the opportunity to spend time with enthusiasts, ‘as an antidote to the negatives that are all too easy for us to focus on. The shows ethos is to promote happiness!' he said about Radio Knex3.

Nutritionist Fiona McKellar tells us why she's been a champion for healthy food way before anyone had even heard of Jamie Oliver. Up and coming Hip Hop artist Deez'L talks about why ‘keeping it real' on a Birmingham housing estate means to him. Self confessed petrol-head Frank Holtz shares his love of Triumph TR7's. Local rocker ‘Quo' explains how he got his nickname and reveals his extensive memorabilia collection.

We also get to hear from spontaneous street-poet Jimmy Fantastic, Barnt Green Sailing Club spokesman Merlin Wilcox and Ghost Hunter Will Buckingham. All real, local characters who believe passionately in what they do.

Please note:
Following the success and continued financial support from Birmingham City Council and Kings Norton New Deal, in 2007/08, an additional show went online and a complimentary free 1000 special one-off second CD was published for fans. This included all new material since the first audio magazine CD that went out in 2006.

To listen online and also to have the opportunity to receive your free CD (subject to availability) - please go to our Radio Show of the website

From early 2006 to early 2008, over 9,000 unique visitors have visited this site. On average, 700 visitors arrive on line per month!

Knex3 stays online.
www.knex3.org plans to remain online until 2010. From the end of March 2008, the project will culminate, leaving its legacy for a further 2 years as an online resource only (no further interviews or programmes/updates are scheduled).

Knex3 at Kings Norton Summer Festivals 2005 & 2006 below

2005

The idea of Radio Knex3 emerged in early 2005 and made its first appearance at the 3 Estates Summer Festival when Harry began interviewing community stall-holders and volunteers who had a real commitment to the things they were promoting.  People began to suggest local characters and enthusiasts and Harry began his mission to track them down!   The project continued to grow and we re-visted the festival to further our pursuits!   The project was initially assisted in part by the Brave New Brum community arts project in 2005.

The Radio Knex3 Launch

On Friday 28th April, Radio Knex3 was launched on 98.7fm New Style Radio to a potential of 80,000 listeners in & around Birmingham. The following afternoon, a special local lunch launch took place where many of the guest interviewees, friends & supporters turned up at the 3 Kings Café at the Fold, Kings Norton.

Guests at the launch tucked into cakes, sandwiches and healthy drinks provided by Foodnet and each took home their free audio cd of the programme. ‘It’s really special. I’ve already been to the website!’ commented a local resident. A great many folk turned up to celebrate and there was just about enough sandwiches. All good stuff!

About Harry Palmer

Harry Palmer is an enthusiast himself. Amongst a rather unusual catalogue of activities, he has worked with the UK’s National Allotment Champion creating the largest live art event in Britain where he and 20 artists (and the community) illuminated Uplands Allotments in Handsworth - namely Bloom98. He has explored the mythological Birmingham Canal Navigation systems, lived in and restored a rowing club where he co-produced/published many written and artistic creations along the river Hull in East Yorkshire. Before moving to Birmingham, he had spent five years working from his studio in a disused linseed oil mill in Hull. More recently, in late 2006, he co-published the world’s first dedicated eccentric newspaper ‘The Eccentric City’ and is currently creating 4 original short films on the meaning that signatures have on a person’s life. As Harry says - ‘never a dull day!’
